Appraisal of Computational Model for Yorùbá Folktale Narrative

چکیده
Our effort at developing computational models for African narratives, particularly those of Yorùbá folktales, is challenged by the diversity in concepts and methodologies in the discipline. This motivated us to pause and consider the various computational models of narratives in the literature. This is with a view to finding the most appropriate or otherwise adapt a closely related one for the purpose. Thorndyke’s story grammar was among the models of narrative in the literature which were appraised, found close in structure and was adapted for the modelling of Yorùbá folktales narrative. In conclusion we found that the modified version of Thorndyke’s model was appropriate for modelling Yorùbá folktales narrative. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation

mark Alan Finlayson inferring Propp ’ s Functions from Semantically Annotated text
Vladimir Propp’s morphology of the Folktale is a seminal work in folkloristics and a compelling subject of computational study. I demonstrate a technique for learning Propp’s functions from semantically annotated text. Fifteen folktales from Propp’s corpus were annotated for semantic roles, co-reference, temporal structure, event sentiment, and dramatis personae. I derived a set of merge rules ...
متن کاملTheoretical Issues in the Computational Modelling of Yorùbá Narratives
Developing a coherent computational model for narratives across multiple cultures raises the question of the components and structure of a framework within which African narratives can be conceptualised and formalised. It is well known that narratives are influenced by cultural, linguistic, and cognitive factors. We identify and define entities, elements, and relations necessary for the adequat...
متن کاملRapithwin, the Demon of winter and Baba Barfi An Archetypal Battle of Survival and Transformation In Iranian Children’s Literature of the Twentieth Century
Mythological and folkloric heritages of nations have often been credited with exclusively distinct identities within the realms of literary criticism. Arguing that in a nation like Iran, the firmly visible borders that have conventionally defined mythology in disparity from folklore have been disturbed, this paper considers these two entities as intertwined and their accentuated differe...
متن کاملToward Character Role Assignment for Natural Language Stories
In this paper we propose a method for automatically assigning narrative roles to characters in stories. To achieve this goal our proposal is to combine natural language processing techniques with domain knowledge extracted from Propp’s morphology of the folktale.

This paper, based on doctoral research carried out from January 2003 through July 2005, addresses the interpretation and representation of non-Western religious material culture in Western museums and offers a comprehensive view of the way traditional religious Yorùbá objects are displayed in contemporary museums in Britain. Museum exhibitions can be conceived as a visual narrative, which absor...
